SOFOBOMO: Leap of Faith
I’m starting over, scrapping the Paris photos and nearly completely rethinking my SoFoBoMo project. The Paris photos just weren’t working for me. I never quite like my own travel photos anyway. They always seem to have a momentum that belongs to someone else, as if the vacation is taking the photos instead of me. All the novelty of travel overwhelms my sense of my own style. I’m much more successful in a place I know.
So, vacation photos out, here photos in. The roll from the first half of this week has 20+ photos that I’d be happy to put together into a book. Hopefully I’ll find the balance of 35 on the half-shot roll in the camera. I should still be able to finish in time, but this reminds me of a university essay; three weeks fooling around, chasing tangents and banging my head against the wall, only to scrap the whole thing and rewrite in a fit of energy in the last few days.

But, Mousie, thou art no thy lane,
In proving foresight may be vain;
The best-laid schemes o’ mice an ‘men
Gang aft agley,
An’lea’e us nought but grief an’ pain,
For promis’d joy!
Still thou art blest, compar’d wi’ me
The present only toucheth thee:
But, Och! I backward cast my e’e.
On prospects drear!
An’ forward, tho’ I canna see,
I guess an’ fear!
I’ve always liked that construction, gang aft agley. Gleefully pessimistic that.
I do like this photo – dramatic lighting – a hint of photoshop?
Can you do another one of your “contact sheets” ? I thought that was quite interesting and since you say there are 20-plus photos ready to go …
That photo is pretty much straight from the scanner. No fancy masking, dodging or burning. Just nice light.
I’ll upload another contact sheet this weekend.
Interesting that you don’t seem to keep your style going through travel. In contrast, I seem to travel so much that I feel like I’ve a style entirely devoted to travelling.
Martin, the more I travel, the less I find that photography fits in with travel. Maybe I’m a bit too much of a serial regionalist.
Matt, I am sorry not to see your Paris shots, but I fully understand your reasoning. I have just returned from a 14 day tour of the Baltics. I found my focus went after a day or so and as a result I ended up being disappointed with my results. I look forward to your next pictures.
“but this reminds me of a university essay; three weeks fooling around, chasing tangents and banging my head against the wall, only to scrap the whole thing and rewrite in a fit of energy in the last few days.”
I find it helps to leave out the the first part.
Though, I say this while trying desperately to get off the internet the night before the second week of exams begins.
Graham, the Paris shots will still make it onto the web.
CPatel, I think you don’t get the second part without doing the first part.
Thanks good news, Matt.
